This morning, Anas woke up Souhila very early, unlike usual on weekends. For a good half hour, he had to cuddle her so that she would wake up slowly, without being in a bad mood afterward. The day before, they had both chosen the outfits they were going to wear. Once her stomach was full, Anas put her in front of the bathroom mirror. Souhila was reading out loud the new book her father bought her last Monday. Anas let her hair curl in its natural form, adding only braids on top of the notch, keeping her locks out of her face for the day. He added a small purple bow to her that went perfectly with her dark purple caftan. For the occasion, Anas had cut his hair and trimmed his beard. He, too, had his midnight blue jabador waiting for him in his bedroom. He couldn't wait to see what Hayat looked like today. See what she had picked to wear. Once he dressed his daughter, he hurriedly dressed himself before going to get the flowers he had ordered.
A bouquet of white roses.
He knew very well what message they conveyed.
On the road, Souhila fell asleep several times, since she had woken up way too early today. This time, Anas was not going to pick his siblings up. They were all going on their own, not forgetting to pick up all the gifts and cakes for the future bride. Before going, he added a personal gift (among the others) that he just got last afternoon: a dublah. That matched a wedding ring with his, and hers, initials on it. Anas was positive that it was the right size, since he secretly asked Salim if he could borrow one of her rings to match it. The closer he got to the destination, the more he was stressed.
He was going to do this again.
Sharing his life with someone new terrified him.
Was she also going to disappear overnight? He thought, looking at Souhila sleeping in her seat. Will I be able to make her stay? To love her enough to keep her?
With a quick shake of his head, he made these questions disappear, far too heavy for such a day. He should only have joy and good humor, no bad thoughts were allowed. To change his mind, Anas started listening to the Quâran â at a low volume, since Souhila was still sleeping â to ease his worries. The sunlight hitting his face, combined with the beautiful recitation, was so pleasing. It made him feel a bit more confident. They were only a few minutes away from Hayatâs childhood house.
His palms were sweating.
Heart racing.
Temperature rising.
He could already see his brothersâ cars parked in front of the house. Sofyan was with their parents and Nourdine was with his wife and his kids. The only ones missing were Houria, her husband and children, and Hafsa. They should be there soon. Anas woke Souhila up slowly, making sure she was ready to walk. As soon as he parked his car, and opened her door, Souhila jumped to join her cousins.
